Illustrious Afro-pop band Sauti Sol release a public statement threatening to sue the Azimio Coalition for copyright infringement. The move comes barely a few hours after Raila Odinga and the Coalition unveiled their official running mate, Martha Karua for the highly contested presidential seat. The boys’ band accused the political coalition of infringing on their musical copyright and using their song ‘Extravaganza’ in their campaign trails.
The hit song, Extravaganza released in 2019 featured Bensol, Sauti Sol, Nviiri the Storyteller, Kaskazini, and female artist Crystal Asige. The track has over 9 million views on YouTube.
Sauti Sol clearly stated that they are fully impartial not associated with any political party and have consequently not issued any rights to their songs. In a different statement, the Raila Odinga led merger claimed to have paid a sum of five hundred thousand Kenyan shillings to the Music Licensing Corporation of Kenya to grant them a license to use any song during their campaign trails.
Ironically, this move to sue the political coalition comes less than a week after an old boys band Les Wanyika made it public to seek a legal address on Sauti Sol on the same copyright violation claims.
